Best Time to Travel from Nepal — Month-by-Month Destination Guide 2026

Most people choose a destination first, then discover it’s monsoon season when they arrive. Do it the other way round: look at when your leave falls, then pick the destination that’s at its best.

Here’s the whole year from Kathmandu, month by month.

January – March: Beach and Desert Season

Kathmandu is cold and dusty; the smart move is south or west to the sun.

  • Maldives — peak dry season, clearest water of the year. The best months for snorkelling, and worth the premium.
  • Dubai — a perfect 20–28°C. This is the only time of year Dubai is genuinely pleasant outdoors.
  • Vietnam — dry in the south, cool in Hanoi. Halong Bay can be misty in Feb–March, which some find atmospheric.
  • Japan — late March brings cherry blossom. Book 3–4 months ahead; it sells out.

April – June: Mountains, Blossom and Europe Opening Up

  • Japan (early April) — the sakura window in Tokyo and Kyoto. The most beautiful two weeks in Asia.
  • Turkey — ideal balloon weather in Cappadocia, mild and uncrowded.
  • Georgia & Baku — green Caucasus valleys, perfect walking weather.
  • Europe — May onwards everything is open and daylight runs late. Start your Schengen visa in February.
  • Bali — dry season begins in May and runs to September.

Avoid Dubai from May. It reaches 45°C and everything becomes an indoor activity.

July – August: Escape the Monsoon

Nepal’s monsoon is exactly when Europe and Bali are at their best — a happy coincidence if you can travel then.

  • Europe — peak summer. Expensive and busy, but every attraction is open and the evenings are long.
  • Bali — dry season peak. This is the classic Bali you see in photographs.
  • Kazakhstan — Almaty’s alpine lakes at their greenest. Genuinely underrated.
  • Uzbekistan — very hot, but Samarkand’s blue domes against a clear sky are worth it.

September – December: The Best Stretch of the Year

October is the single best month to travel from Nepal. Almost every destination is in season, the weather is comfortable nearly everywhere, and it lines up with Dashain leave.

  • Turkey & Georgia (Sept–Oct) — golden autumn, fewer crowds, ideal temperatures.
  • Japan (mid Oct–Nov) — autumn maple season. Many travellers prefer it to cherry blossom.
  • Vietnam & Thailand (Oct onwards) — cool dry season begins.
  • Maldives & Dubai (Nov–Dec) — back into peak season and worth every rupee.

Travelling during Dashain? See our Dashain 2026 guide — you’ve already paid for the expensive flight, so adding a beach leg from Kathmandu costs far less than a separate trip.

Plan Backwards From Your Visa

The destination may be in season, but if the visa takes six weeks you’ve already missed it. Work backwards:

DestinationStart planning
Maldives, Bali3–4 weeks (visa on arrival)
Vietnam, Georgia, Uzbekistan4–5 weeks (e-Visa)
Dubai, Thailand, Malaysia5–6 weeks
Singapore, Japan6–8 weeks
Europe (Schengen)3 months

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best month to travel abroad from Nepal?

October. Nearly every destination is in season — Turkey, Japan, Vietnam, Thailand and Georgia are all at their best — and it coincides with Dashain holidays. Book early, as it’s also the busiest month for flights out of Kathmandu.

Where should I travel during Nepal’s monsoon?

June to August is peak season in Europe and Bali, and excellent for Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan. Avoid Dubai (45°C+) and note that Vietnam sees heavy rain in parts during these months.

When is the cheapest time to travel from Nepal?

May–June and November (excluding festival weeks) tend to be cheapest. Avoid Dashain, Tihar and school holidays, when flights from Kathmandu rise sharply. Shifting by two weeks around peak dates can save 20–30%.

When should I book to catch cherry blossom in Japan?

Sakura runs late March to mid-April, lasting roughly a week in each city. Book 3–4 months ahead — hotels and flights sell out, and Japan visas take 5–7 working days on top.
