What Happens on Each Day
Day 1 — Kaag Tihar (7 November)
Crows are treated as messengers, and families leave food for them on roofs and in courtyards at dawn. It is the quiet opening of the festival.
Day 2 — Kukur Tihar and Laxmi Puja (8 November)
Dogs, including street dogs, are given tika, flower garlands and a good meal. In the evening comes the main event of Tihar: Laxmi Puja. Houses are cleaned, doorways are decorated with coloured rangoli, and rows of lamps and lights are lit to welcome the goddess of wealth. Groups of children and young people begin going from house to house singing Deusi and Bhailo.
Day 3 — Gai Tihar (9 November)
Cows, sacred in Hindu tradition, are worshipped with garlands and tika.
Day 4 — Goru Tihar, Govardhan Puja and Mha Puja (10 November)
Oxen are honoured. In the Kathmandu Valley the Newar community performs Mha Puja, a ritual worship of one’s own body and life, and it marks the start of the new year in the Nepal Sambat calendar.
Day 5 — Bhai Tika (11 November)
The most emotional day for many families. Sisters put a seven-coloured tika on their brothers’ foreheads, hang garlands around their necks, and wish them a long life. Brothers give gifts in return. Families travel from across Nepal and abroad to be together for it, which is why transport is at its busiest around this date.
