December and January are the second-biggest travel season for Nepali families after Dashain — school holidays line up, offices slow down, and the weather in Kathmandu gives everyone a reason to go somewhere warmer. But there is a catch that costs people tens of thousands of rupees every year: late December is the most expensive week of the year to fly, everywhere.
Book now, in September or October, and you travel at a normal price. Book in late November and you pay the peak. This guide covers where to go, what it actually costs, and how to time it.
Why You Should Book Christmas and New Year Trips in September
| When You Book | Typical Flight Cost | Hotel Availability |
|---|---|---|
| September – early October | Baseline | Full choice |
| Late October – November | +20–35% | Good hotels going |
| December | +50–80% | Leftovers, often split across hotels |
The 24 December – 3 January window is the single tightest period in the international travel calendar. Airlines price it accordingly, and popular resorts in the Maldives and Dubai sell out months ahead. There is no strategy that beats booking early — only strategies that reduce the damage of booking late.
Where Nepali Travellers Go for Christmas and New Year
1. Dubai — The New Year’s Eve Destination
Nothing else in reach of Kathmandu does New Year like Dubai. The Burj Khalifa fireworks are the headline, December weather is perfect at 24–28°C, and the Dubai Shopping Festival runs through the season with genuine discounts.
- From: NPR 95,000 for 4 nights
- Visa: e-Visa, easy — see our Dubai visa guide
- Best for: families, first-time international travellers, shoppers
- Warning: 31 December hotel rates in Dubai can be triple the normal night. Book by October.

2. Thailand — The Best-Value Warm Escape
December to February is Thailand’s dry season and its best weather of the year — which is exactly why it is also peak season. Even so, Thailand remains the strongest value of any warm destination from Kathmandu.
- From: NPR 75,000 for 5 nights
- Visa: visa on arrival — read our Thailand visa guide first, there is a cash requirement
- Best for: couples, groups of friends, families with young children
- Tip: travel 5–20 December or after 5 January and you get the same weather at a much better price
3. Maldives — For the Honeymoon and the Anniversary
December to April is the Maldives dry season, and Christmas–New Year is its absolute peak. Resorts add compulsory gala dinner charges on 24 and 31 December that catch people by surprise.
- Visa: free visa on arrival, 30 days — the easiest of all
- Best for: honeymoons and milestone anniversaries
- Tip: shift to mid-January and the same resort can cost 30–40% less
See our Maldives package guide and honeymoon packages for couples.
4. Europe — A Real White Christmas
Christmas markets in Germany and Austria, snow in the Alps, and cities at their most atmospheric. Europe in December is genuinely special — but it needs the longest lead time of anything on this list.
- Visa: Schengen — appointments for December travel get scarce from October onwards. This is the deadline that actually matters. Start now, not in November. Our Schengen visa guide walks through it.
- Best for: experienced travellers, families wanting snow
- Reality check: short days and real cold. Pack properly.
See the Europe tour price breakdown and our Europe packages.
5. Almaty — Snow and Skiing, Without the Europe Price
The under-the-radar answer for anyone who wants a proper winter holiday. Shymbulak ski resort sits an hour from Almaty city, and a week there costs less than half a European ski trip.
- From: NPR 160,000 for the 6-day Winter Ski Special
- Visa: allow 3–4 weeks — book by early November for a December trip
Details: our Central Asia guide and the Kazakhstan tour package.
6. Vietnam and Singapore — The Balanced Picks
Vietnam offers the most sightseeing per rupee of anywhere in Southeast Asia, and December is pleasant in the south. Singapore does Christmas beautifully — Orchard Road lights, Gardens by the Bay, and it is the easiest destination anywhere for families with small children.

Five Things to Sort Before You Book
- Check every passport in the group. Six months validity beyond your return date. Renewals take time in December.
- Start the visa first, not the flight. For Europe especially, the Schengen appointment sets your dates — not the airline.
- Confirm school holiday dates before you commit to a departure.
- Arrange foreign currency early. Exchange counters get busy, and there are limits — see our forex guide for Nepali travellers.
- Ask what “peak season supplement” means on your quote. Gala dinners on 24 and 31 December are often compulsory and not always shown upfront. We list them.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the cheapest warm destination for Christmas from Nepal?
Thailand, at around NPR 75,000 for 5 nights. Travel in early December or after 5 January and it gets cheaper still. For more options see our guide to cheapest international trips from Nepal under NPR 100,000.
Is it too late to plan a December Europe trip?
Not yet — but September is genuinely the last comfortable month to start. The Schengen appointment is the bottleneck, not the flight.
Can we travel as a large family group?
Yes, and group rates improve from around 6 travellers. See our family and group tour packages guide.
What if plans change after booking?
Peak-season bookings are less flexible than off-season ones — that is airline and hotel policy, not ours. We tell you the cancellation terms before you pay, in writing.

The difference between booking this month and booking in December is routinely NPR 30,000–60,000 per person on the same trip. That is the whole argument.
