Unlike Thailand or Dubai, there is no visa on arrival and no simple e-visa for Nepali passport holders. The Japan tourist visa is a documents-heavy embassy application, and it is refused more often than any other destination we handle.
The good news: refusals are almost always avoidable. They come from weak financial evidence and vague itineraries, not from anything about you personally. This guide explains what the embassy is actually looking for.
Do Nepali Citizens Need a Visa for Japan?
Yes. Nepali passport holders need a visa arranged before travel. There is no visa on arrival. Applications are made to the Embassy of Japan in Kathmandu, and for tourism Japan generally requires the application to be submitted through an accredited travel agency rather than by the traveller directly.
That agency requirement is not a formality. The embassy expects a complete, professionally assembled file, and an incomplete one is simply returned.
What the Embassy Is Really Assessing
Every document exists to answer one question: will you return to Nepal? Understand that and the requirements stop feeling arbitrary.

⚠️ The Five Things That Cause Refusals
- A bank balance that appeared last month. A large deposit just before applying is the single biggest red flag. The embassy wants to see a balance that has been there for months, built up normally. Start preparing 6 months out.
- A vague itinerary. “Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka — 7 days” is not an itinerary. It must be dated, specific and consistent with your hotel bookings.
- Mismatched documents. Flight dates that disagree with hotel dates, or an itinerary that contradicts both. Officers check this.
- Thin ties to Nepal. Young, single, unemployed applicants face the most scrutiny. It is not unfair — it is statistical. Counter it with whatever genuine evidence you have.
- Applying too late. Rushed files are incomplete files.
