Thousands of Nepali families have a son, daughter or sibling in the UK. The visit visa is how you get to the graduation, the wedding, or simply a summer with the grandchildren — and it is one of the most document-heavy applications a Nepali passport holder will make.
It is not, however, a lottery. UK visit visas are assessed against one question, and once you understand it the whole document list makes sense.
The One Question Behind Every UK Visit Visa
The officer is deciding whether you are a genuine visitor: someone who will do what they said, afford it, and go home at the end. Every document exists to answer part of that.
| What is asked for | What it proves |
|---|---|
| 6 months of bank statements | The trip is affordable without working illegally |
| Employment, business or pension proof | You have a reason and a routine to return to |
| Family registration certificate | Your ties are in Nepal |
| Hotel or host details and return flights | The plan is real and time-limited |
| Previous passports and travel history | You have respected visa conditions before |
UK Visa for Nepali Citizens — The Checklist
UK visit visa — what our visa desk needs
- Visa type: Tourist
- Cost with our processing: NPR 40,000 per person
- Processing time: about 20 days — apply early
- Passport — Upload a clear scanned copy of your valid passport, including the bio-data page and relevant stamped/visa pages. The passport should have at least 6 months validity and at least 2 blank pages, as specified in the checklist.
- Previous Passports & Visa History (if applicable) — If available, upload previous passports and relevant pages showing previous visas, entry/exit stamps or other travel history.
- Previous Visa Refusal Documents (if applicable) — If you have previously been refused a visa for any country, upload the relevant refusal letter or supporting refusal document. If you have never had a visa refusal, this is not required.
- Residence Permit (if applicable) — If applying from a country other than your country of nationality, upload your valid residence permit. According to the checklist, it should remain valid for at least 3 months after the intended travel period.
- Passport-Size Photograph — Upload one recent digital colour photograph, approximately 35 × 45 mm, with a plain white background. A biometric-style photograph is preferred.
- Employment / Business / Occupation Proof — Upload documents according to your current status. If employed: employer letter stating your position, length of employment, approved leave dates and confirmation of return; last 3 pay slips; and SGK/social-security registration document with readable barcode where applicable. If self-employed/business owner: company registration, current-year tax registration certificate, signature circular/authority-to-sign document and official company formation notice. If a farmer: farmer certificate and proof of land/products. If a student: college/institution letter stating course details, current year/term and confirmation of return after the visit. If retired: pension documents or other appropriate evidence supporting your status and intention to return. Upload the complete set applicable to your current status.
- Financial Proof — Upload bank statements for the most recent 6 months from the applicant or sponsor. The funds should be sufficient, accessible and consistent with the planned trip. According to the checklist, fixed deposits are not accepted as the main financial evidence, and unexplained recent large deposits should be avoided or appropriately supported.
- Family Registration Certificate — Upload a clear copy of the detailed family registration certificate showing the relevant family information.
- Proof of Accommodation — Upload a confirmed hotel reservation covering the intended stay. The accommodation dates should correspond with the applicant’s travel/flight dates.
- Round-Trip Flight Reservation — Upload a round-trip flight reservation showing the intended arrival and departure dates.
- Travel Health Insurance — Upload travel health insurance valid for the entire intended stay. The policy should cover medical emergencies and repatriation as specified in the provided checklist.
This checklist comes straight from our visa desk and updates when requirements change. Ask us if your situation is different.
⚠️ Declare a Previous Refusal — Always
If any country has refused you a visa before, say so and upload the refusal letter. An undeclared refusal that later comes to light is treated far more seriously than the original refusal ever was, and it can affect applications for years.
The same applies to travel history: old passports with used visas and entry stamps help you. Send them even if you think they are irrelevant.
How Long It Takes
| Stage | Time to allow |
|---|---|
| Building the file (documents, statements, letters) | 2–3 weeks |
| Online application and biometrics appointment | Book as soon as the file is ready |
| Processing | About 20 days |
| Start planning | At least 2 months before travel |
Summer and December are the busiest periods for UK applications from Nepal, and appointment slots get scarce before processing even begins. If the trip is tied to a fixed date — a graduation, a wedding — start three months out.
If Your Family in the UK Is Sponsoring You
Very common, and perfectly acceptable. If your son or daughter in Britain is paying, the file needs to show their side too: their financial evidence, their immigration status, and a letter of invitation explaining the relationship, the purpose of the visit and where you will stay.
Our London branch can work with your relatives in the UK while our Kathmandu office prepares your side — one team, both ends, no documents lost between two agencies.
The Mistakes That Cause Refusals
- A sudden large deposit before applying. Funds should look like normal savings, with a visible history.
- Money that is not really available — the balance must be accessible, not locked away.
- A vague purpose. “Tourism” is weaker than “attending my daughter’s graduation on 14 July, returning 2 August”.
- Dates that do not match across the flights, accommodation and invitation letter.
- Thin ties to Nepal with nothing to counterbalance them.
- An undeclared refusal. See above — this one is avoidable and costly.
UK Compared to Other Visas from Nepal
| Destination | Difficulty | Lead time |
|---|---|---|
| Maldives | Free visa on arrival | None |
| Thailand | Arranged in advance | About 1 week |
| China | Three documents | About 15 days |
| United Kingdom | Hard — 11 documents | About 20 days + preparation |
| Japan | Hard | About 15 days |
| Europe (Schengen) | Hard | About 30 days |
Frequently Asked Questions
How much money should I show for a UK visit visa?
There is no published minimum. What matters is that the balance comfortably covers the trip, has a visible history across six months, and is genuinely accessible. If a sponsor is paying, their evidence carries the weight instead.
I was refused before. Can I apply again?
Yes, but something material must change — stronger finances, clearer ties, a better-explained purpose. Bring us the refusal letter and we will tell you honestly whether it is worth reapplying yet.
Do I need travel insurance?
It is expected in the file, and sensible regardless — NHS treatment is not free for visitors. See our travel insurance guide.
Can you also arrange the trip once the visa is approved?
Yes — flights, hotels and onward travel in Britain or Europe. Many families combine the UK visit with a few days in Europe while the Schengen visa is worth applying for anyway.
