China is Nepal’s northern neighbour, and yet far fewer Nepali travellers holiday there than in Thailand or Dubai. That is changing — and it should. The Great Wall, the Terracotta Warriors, Shanghai’s skyline and a 300 km/h bullet train between them make one of the most impressive trips available on a Nepali passport.
The visa is also easier than most people expect: three documents and about 15 days.

China Visa for Nepali Citizens
China visa — what our visa desk needs
- Visa type: Tourist
- Cost with our processing: NPR 10,000 per person
- Processing time: about 15 days — apply early
- Passport — Upload a clear scanned copy of your valid passport. The passport must have at least 6 months of remaining validity. Make sure all passport details are clearly visible and readable.
- Passport-Size Photograph — Upload one recent colour MRP-size photograph measuring 353 × 472 pixels with a plain white background. The image should be clear and suitable for visa processing.
- Financial Proof — Upload your bank statement covering the most recent 3 months. The statement should show a closing balance of at least NPR 300,000 (3 lakh) as specified in the checklist.
This checklist comes straight from our visa desk and updates when requirements change. Ask us if your situation is different.
Two details cause most of the delays. The photograph has an exact pixel size (353 × 472, plain white background) — a normal passport photo scan is often rejected. And the bank statement needs three months of history with a closing balance of at least NPR 3 lakh. Build that balance before you apply, not the week before.
Getting There
Kathmandu has direct flights to several Chinese cities depending on the season, with onward domestic connections to Beijing and Shanghai included in the package. We confirm the best routing for your dates when we quote.
When to Go
| Season | What to expect |
|---|---|
| April – May | ★ Best — mild, clear and comfortable for the Great Wall |
| September – October | ★ Best — autumn colour, dry and pleasant. Avoid the first week of October (Golden Week) |
| June – August | Hot and humid, heavy crowds at major sights |
| November – March | Cold in Beijing, but fewest crowds and lowest prices |
One date to avoid: China’s Golden Week in early October, when domestic travel fills every train and site. For a broader view, see our month-by-month guide to travelling from Nepal.
Practical Notes for Nepali Travellers
- Payments are mobile-first. Cash is accepted but awkward; set up a mobile payment app linked to your card before you fly. Our guides help on arrival.
- Many Western apps and websites are restricted. Tell family at home which messaging app you will use before you go.
- English is limited outside hotels — which is exactly why our packages include an English-speaking guide throughout.
- Trains, not internal flights, where possible. The bullet train is faster door-to-door and part of the experience.

How much money do I need to show?
A closing balance of at least NPR 3 lakh across your most recent three months of statements.

Can I combine China with Hong Kong?
Yes, and it is a natural pairing — but note the Hong Kong visa takes about 45 days, far longer than China’s. Start that one first.
