Most visa trouble is not caused by hard rules. It is caused by sending the wrong thing: a photo with glasses on, a bank statement one month too short, a passport page nobody asked for. Each mistake costs days, and at festival time days are the whole trip.

Step 1 — Check the Requirements Before You Decide Anything

Open the visa section and choose your country. You see the current checklist, the processing time and the cost — the same list our visa desk works from, not a copy that went stale last year.

Step 2 — Photograph Your Documents Properly

This is where applications are won or lost. A few rules that apply almost everywhere:

• Use daylight, not a flash. Glare across a passport page makes it unreadable, and unreadable means rejected.
• Lay the document flat on a plain surface and shoot straight down, with all four corners in frame.
• The photo is a real photo — plain white background, no glasses, no cap, ears visible. Several countries also fix the size. Do not crop a selfie.
• Send the pages asked for. For an MRP passport that is usually pages 2 and 31; for an e-passport, the first two. The app tells you which.
• Check your passport expiry first. Under six months and nothing else matters.

Step 3 — Sort the Bank Statement Early

The slowest document is almost always the bank statement, because you have to request it from the branch. Start it the day you decide to travel.

Two things people get wrong:

1. The period. Most countries want three or four months; Europe and the UK want six. A statement that is one month short gets sent back.
2. The balance history. A large deposit made the week before you apply is the single biggest red flag in visa assessment. Officers are looking for money that has been there, not money that arrived for the application.

If a relative is funding the trip, say so upfront — sponsorship is normal and acceptable, but it has to be documented rather than disguised.

Step 4 — Upload and Track

Upload each document against its item in the checklist, so nothing is missed and nothing extra is sent. Then you can see where your application has reached instead of phoning to ask.
