Last-Minute Dashain 2026 — Where You Can Still Go

Dashain begins on 11 October and Tihar falls 7–11 November. If you have only just decided to travel, you have not missed everything — but what you can book now is decided almost entirely by one thing: how long each visa takes.

Here is the honest version, sorted by what is still realistic.

Still Possible for Dashain

Destination Visa time Realistic?
Maldives Free on arrival ★ Yes — nothing to arrange but flights and hotel
Sri Lanka Online authorisation ★ Yes
Thailand About 7 days Yes, if your documents are ready this week
Vietnam About 7 days Yes, if you start immediately
Bali About 10 days Tight — realistic for travel later in the festival
Malaysia About 10 days Tight, same as Bali
Dubai / UAE About 10 days Tight for Dashain, comfortable for Tihar

For anything in that table, the bottleneck is usually not the visa office — it is how fast you get us your documents. A bank statement you have to request from the branch can cost you three days.

Too Late for Dashain — Aim for Tihar or Later

Destination Visa time Earliest realistic trip
China About 15 days Tihar, if you start now
Japan About 15 days Tihar at the earliest
United Kingdom About 20 days Late November
Europe (Schengen) About 30 days December — start now for Christmas
Turkey About 40 days Late November onwards
Hong Kong About 45 days December

If your heart is set on one of these, book it properly for Tihar or Christmas rather than rushing a weak application. A refused visa costs the fee and the trip.

The Fastest Option: the Maldives

Nepali passport holders get a free 30-day visa on arrival in the Maldives. No application, no documents, no waiting — just a passport valid six months, a return ticket and a hotel booking.

It is the one destination where a decision today can still become a trip next week. See Maldives packages and costs and current flight prices.

What Late Booking Actually Costs You

Being honest about this: booking in the last fortnight before Dashain does not just risk the visa. It costs money.

  • Flights are at their annual peak, and the cheapest fare classes went weeks ago.
  • Hotels in Pattaya, Bali and Dubai fill with travellers from across South Asia during October.
  • Choice narrows — you take what is left, which often means split hotels or awkward flight times.

None of that makes the trip bad. It just means the same holiday costs more than it would have in August. If you are reading this and your trip is actually for next Dashain, the lesson is simple: the booking window that saves real money is July and August.

If You Cannot Travel This Festival

Two sensible alternatives:

  1. Book Tihar instead (7–11 November). Shorter holiday, but far better availability and noticeably lower fares.
  2. Start your Christmas trip now. December is the single most expensive week of the year to fly, and the Schengen queue is the real deadline — see our Christmas and New Year guide.

How to Move Fast Without Making Mistakes

  1. Check every passport today. Six months of validity beyond your return date. This is the single most common reason a rushed trip collapses.
  2. Get your bank statement now, before you choose a destination — most visas need the last 3–4 months, and it is the slowest document to obtain.
  3. Check the exact checklist in the app before you photograph anything, so you send the right pages the first time. See our new app.
  4. Tell us your real deadline. If you must be back for a family ritual, say so — it changes what we recommend.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I still travel somewhere for Dashain if I start today?

Yes — the Maldives or Sri Lanka with no waiting, or Thailand and Vietnam if your documents are ready this week.

Is there any way to speed up a visa?

Occasionally, at extra cost, depending on the country. What genuinely saves time is a complete, correct file on the first attempt — resubmissions cost more days than any express option saves.

What if my passport expires soon?

Renew first. No visa is issued on a passport with under six months validity, and no airline will board you.

Can you arrange a trip for my parents while I am abroad?

Yes, and festival time is when we do it most. You book and pay from abroad; our Kathmandu office handles their documents and sees them off. See our guide for NRNs.
